Exiting National Anti-Poverty Campaign and Mental Health

摘要： We investigate the impact of exiting a national anti-poverty program on mental health, using China's post-2021 policy transition as a natural experiment. Employing a regression discontinuity design, we find significant improvements in mental health outcomes, including reduced depression and increased self-efficacy, among residents in counties that exited the program. Our analysis shows that strengthened social ties, such as increased emotional support and better communication, mediate this improvement. Residents' economic conditions do not significantly change following the program's termination. These findings suggest that reduced government intervention after poverty alleviation fosters closer community bonds, improving mental health with limited economic repercussions.

主讲人简介：

庄晨，北京大学经济学院资源与环境经济学系助理教授，北京大学中国信用研究中心副主任，GLO研究员。2022年毕业于美国华盛顿大学经济系，研究方向为发展经济学（侧重健康福祉的决定因素、人力资本投资、生育决策、城乡协同发展）和实证产业组织（侧重医药市场、平台经济、生产力、企业行为）。近年来在《经济学》（季刊）、《中国农村经济》、Journal of Comparative Economics、Journal of International Money and Finance、The Word Economy、China Economic Review、Economics Letters、Nature Communications、Preventive Medicine等国内外权威期刊发表论文二十余篇。
